Autumn at Fontevraud is the third of the four cultural seasons that punctuate the year at the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. During this period, the site's gardens are covered with a carpet of leaves, nature slows its course and the days grow shorter — all evocations of passing time and the world's unbroken cycle. After the effervescence of summer, this return to serenity presents itself as an invitation to reflection and a journey through the centuries within the abbey.

Nestled in the heart of Anjou for nearly 900 years, the Abbey of Fontevraud bears the mark of a fascinating past shaped by the twists of History. In turn an abbey, a prison, then a Cultural Meeting Centre, the site and its heritage offer many avenues for reflection, which it is up to us to follow and explore in order to decipher the issues of the past and better understand those of the present. While history is first and foremost a science, it is also a vector of inspiration, creation and escape. Thus, autumn at Fontevraud is an occasion to come together, young and old alike, explorers of knowledge, discoverers of history and chasers of dreams.

In order to give voice to both scholarship and imagination, the Abbey is launching a new programme this autumn: "Contretemps, the encounters that speak of history in the present." Over three days, historians, authors, artists and philosophers take turns telling, reflecting and bearing witness around a specific theme. Concerts, talks, literary interviews and even game workshops unfold within the walls of Fontevraud, each a means of expression revealing the many facets of the subject at hand. Contemplating the past to find in it a reflection of the present, and perhaps to glimpse the shadows of the future — that is the whole spirit of "Contretemps."

As a Cultural Meeting Centre, the Abbey strikes a subtle balance between tradition and creation, expressed in particular through the search for avenues of reflection to understand tomorrow's world and the weaving of links between what was and what is. The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, cultural heritage turned natural showcase for contemporary creation, is thus a place of recognition for a legacy that it is up to us not only to share, but to make our own. This is the idea of culture that we champion together with the Pays de la Loire Region.

"CONTRETEMPS": A FIRST EDITION DEVOTED TO UTOPIA AND VISIONS OF THE FUTURE

An itinerant preacher nourished by Christian charity, who dreamed of an ideal city to which he gave the face of Fontevraud, Robert d'Arbrissel celebrates his 980th anniversary in 2025. On this occasion, "Contretemps" draws on the narrative of the ideal city to shed light on visions of societies to come — sometimes realistic, sometimes fantasised. Evoked by Robert d'Arbrissel, this subject also echoes the questions and concerns running through our contemporary world. Between utopian dreams inviting us to imagine worlds where individuals would live in harmony with themselves and with nature, and technological realities driven by an endless race for progress, the future is a horizon that remains to be invented.

The quest to overcome the limits of the human condition and the fear of death have haunted the minds of men for a long time. From its founding until the 19th century, the Abbey of Fontevraud illustrates this quest for eternal life, becoming an emblematic place for the salvation of souls through prayer and renunciation. Today, while questions surrounding immortality have changed little, the methods used to achieve it have transformed: human beings continue to seek to transcend their own nature, but now turn their gaze towards science and technology. Conceived in the 12th century as an ideal micro-society governed by strict rules of conduct, then as a prison designed to "reform" prisoners perceived as morally deficient, the Abbey of Fontevraud lies at the heart of reflections on social, political and economic relations. In everyday life, these questions invite the creation of imaginary worlds that populate literature, painting, architecture and cinema. A true source of inspiration, the future invites travel, reflection, debate, but also the depiction of visionary worlds.

Designed as a gathering for sharing and transmission, the first edition of "Contretemps" unfolds over three days. During these days, high school students, professionals and the general public come together to reflect on the future, on these imagined representations, but also on the philosophical and ethical issues that emerge at the heart of reflections on tomorrow's world.
