Since the summer of 2025, BIENALSUR has been rolling out an unprecedented transnational contemporary art journey across 34 countries around the globe. Between interactive exhibitions, site-specific installations, residencies and round tables, the biennial asserts an open and decentralised model, far removed from market logic and fixed formats, engaging with major institutions as well as territories on the margins of traditional circuits.

In Europe, the programme runs until January 2026, with nearly forty events across 11 countries on the continent. In partnership with leading institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the Museo Reina Sofía and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, BIENALSUR offers a series of exhibitions and encounters that brings artists, thinkers and audiences into dialogue.

This journey is structured around BIENALSUR 2025's five major curatorial themes:

• A fairer world, dedicated to social, economic and territorial inequalities;
• Dissidences and dissonances, which gives voice to hidden knowledge and memories;
• Becoming territory, focused on the links between body, community and environment;
• Ways of dwelling, on contemporary forms of cohabitation and displacement;
• Memory and rewritings, which revisits official historical narratives through art as a critical and reparative tool.

BIENALSUR 2025 EUROPE CALENDAR - Selected highlights

In keeping with the volatility and urgency of present times, BIENALSUR adopts a dynamic of permanent work in progress, continuously adjusting its schedule according to the requests of the community of institutions and artists that make up the biennial. "They are the true protagonists of BIENALSUR," notes Diana Wechsler, artistic director of BIENALSUR.

SPAIN — Since 9 July, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid has been presenting Resistance. A selection of South American videos. An exhibition of classic and contemporary video works by South American artists, exploring resistance as a political and aesthetic act, between historical memory, social struggles and formal experimentation in South America.

FRANCE — On 4 October, the Centre Pompidou, in collaboration with MK2 Bibliothèque, presents Latin American Suite, a video programme accompanied by a meeting with BIENALSUR's founders: Diana Wechsler and Anibal Jozami. Through works created in critical contexts (polluted spaces, extreme climatic conditions, riots...), several Latin American artists question artistic conventions and explore new ways of thinking about the image and its capacity to resist, bear witness and reinvent memory.

ITALY — From October, the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan will present the exhibition Invocations. Animal Presences. "Invocations" is a curatorial project that, through a series of exhibition chapters, explores the relationship between the human body and the non-human bodies that populate our world: animals, the natural landscape, the plant kingdom and stones. As part of this series, the project presented at the Fabbrica examines the relationships between human and non-human bodies, in a context where boundaries of identity and hybridisation — from mythology to cyborg visions — play a central role. The works, in dialogue with 20th-century art history, shift the gaze towards non-anthropocentric perspectives and explore possible forms of symbiotic coexistence.

GERMANY — From 5 July until 23 November 2025, SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin presents the exhibition TEJIDOS SONOROS. 30 years Berlin – Buenos Aires. Marking the 30th anniversary of the twinning between Berlin and Buenos Aires, the exhibition weaves together artistic positions from both cities in a sensitive conversation. It brings together artists from both countries around the bonds that unite human beings and spaces, through joy, language, sound and ancestral knowledge. Between installations, photographs and sounds, the works offer a reflection on community as a cultural practice founded on listening, mutual support and exchange.

TURKEY — Istanbul Modern presents Images in Transit with Christian Boltanski (dates to be confirmed). A series of video projections in non-traditional exhibition spaces of the museum, in dialogue with its architecture, current programming and environment. Christian Boltanski's work explores maritime themes and their connection to nature, addressing contemporary ecological and social issues with a poetic eye, and invites visitors to experience unexpected dialogues between moving images and museum spaces.
