In Lisbon, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is hosting the exhibition "EUROPA, Oxalá" from March 3 to August 22, 2022. This exhibition is a co-production of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Delegation in France, the MUCEM (Marseille), the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren) and the CES - Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra in Portugal.

The exhibition Europa, Oxalá presents about 60 artworks in the fields of painting, drawing, sculpture, film, photography and installation by 21 Afro-European artists, whose parents and grandparents were born or lived in Angola, Congo, Benin, Guinea, Algeria or Madagascar. From these ancestors they have inherited indirect memories, which come to them in a diffuse way through family, groups of friends and daily public life. The starting points for important research work in historical and family archives are not only voices, sounds and gestures, but also images and memories of the cultures of the territories of origin of their ancestors.

The unique set of artworks that will be exhibited in the Grand Gallery of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation between March 4th and August 22nd nurtures an original reflection on racism, the decolonisation of the arts, the status of women in contemporary society and the deconstruction of colonial thinking.
