The Cécile Fakhoury Gallery - Abidjan is pleased to present “Paraboles d’un règne sauvage“ the first solo exhibition of the Senegalese artist Serigne Ibrahima Dieye.

In a converted space, aiming at disturbing the visitor’s spatial bearings, Serigne Ibrahima Dieye proposes a series of paintings, works on paper as well as an immersive installation, as he continues to reflect on the political and social landscape of our contemporary societies.

In the manner of a visual fable, the artist depicts the story of a confrontation between characters masked as animals, whose thirst for power, selfishness and obscure motivations evoke a certain category of world rulers.

Serigne Ibrahima Dieye installs this contemporary jungle in the heart of the gallery space, inhabits it with threatening anthropomorphic allegories and carries the visitor into the depths of this hostile universe.

Serigne Ibrahima Dieye thus forces us to face the aberrations of our societies head-on and unadorned. The artist pushes us to reflect on our role in the shaping of the world, on our share of individual responsibility, while making the creative gesture a privileged act of resilience as we head towards the abyss.

The Artist

Born in 1988 in Dakar, Senegal, Serigne Ibrahima Dieye lives and works in Grand Mbao, Senegal.

Trained at the ‘Ecole Nationale des Arts de Dakar’ from which he graduated in 2013, Serigne Ibrahima Dieye developed a practice of incorporating the mediums of drawing, painting and collage.

Often working large scale and frequently on square canvases that are not without the recollection of models in contemporary images, the artist mixes symbols, forms and materials.

Serigne Ibrahima Dieye thus composes the strange scenes of a contemporary theatre of which hybrid animals and mysterious figures are the protagonists. This is the beginning of the story of urban fables, both fantasy and drama, which borrow their subject matter from various cultures and draw their depth from the nebulae of history and current events.

The Gallery

Galerie Cécile Fakhoury opened its doors in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in September 2012. In May 2018 the gallery inaugurated a second space in Dakar, Senegal and a showroom in Paris. The gallery aims to promote contemporary art in Africa. It offers visibility to creativity and contemporary artistic diversity in Africa through its programming of solo shows and group exhibitions, participation in international art fairs and biennales, and through its collaboration with foreign galleries.
