The living world is a great reservoir of information. Its organisms have developed techniques to protect themselves, adapt to their environment and manage change. With regard to the environmental challenges of the 21st century, the living world is a fundamental source of inspiration.  A fact borne out by this new permanent exhibition, Bioinspired, a different approach, which is presented in the greenhouse of the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie. Surrounded by three diverse ecosystems, visitors learn about biomimicry, a life-friendly scientific approach that allows us to plan more sustainable, harmonious environments.

This sensory itinerary explores the living world. Based on topical subjects, it enables a better understanding of nature and its processes, which inspire biomimetic studies.

As soon as they enter, visitors find all their senses in great demand. They are surrounded by living things as they follow a pathway of plants and sounds that react to their presence. Then, as they go up the stairs to the greenhouse, they are introduced to environmental issues.

In the greenhouse – an architectural construction designed by Dominique Perrault in 1997 – there are three ecosystems side by side: a coral reef and its macroalgae bioreactor, a mangrove swamp and forest land with its permaculture garden. A display illustrated by a naturalist artist presents 8 to 10 species associated with each one. As they visit in different seasons, visitors see ecosystems develop there. They also discover the different workings of the living world and bio-inspired approaches.

«To tackle the environmental and societal challenges we face, there are original solutions developed by nature itself. But first, we must understand them. The permanent exhibition Bio-inspired, a different approach examines this little-known field of research. An original production created by the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, it continues the exploration of the contemporary world begun by Robots in 2019." Bruno Maquart, chair of Universcience
