Rui Moreira‘s drawings at Jaeger Bucher gallery

The first exhibition in France by Portuguese artist Rui Moreira gathers twenty drawings, as well as a film Conquering the Concave

Portuguese artist Rui Moreira, born 1971, works exclusively on paper, his chosen medium for translating physical and mental experiences.

This exhibition, Inner Monsoon, is his first in France . It presents a series of ‘inner landscapes’, three groups of works on paper, figurative and abstract, with a unity of flow and movement. The pieces alternately evoke divinities, landscapes and geometric constructions. Each is worked painstakingly, patiently, the lines being repeated endlessly, like a ritually enacted mnemonic exercise.

The works are characterised by their lack of visual borderline so the spectator is able to view the work from within. They have neither chronology nor linear spatialisation. Arising from travels in Morocco and India, inner voyages and outer rhizomes form landscapes that translate the inner displacement whether spatial, temporal, physical or mental.

Each image has grown out of a multiplicity of influences (a film sequence, a poem, a piece of music, a journey, a photograph or other work) and seeks no specific synthesis or definitive result other than superimposing various states of flux amont the different works.

The exhibition will showcase twenty or so works on paper and a film entitled Conquering the Concave about the monumental dome painted by Rui Moreira in a church in the Algarve, Portugal. A bilingual French/English catalogue introduced by the Portuguese art critic Manuel Castro Caldas, will be published for the exhibition.
